Julian Chase

Note: Julian isn't a real character per se. He is simply a character from elsewhere I dropped in my fanmade Anime Reviewer Universe to make the TGWTG Wiki seem more like a community.

Julian Chase is an African-American man who pilots a neurolinked mech called a Holon. He's from gen:LOCK and is the main character of the Julian Series. He is voiced by Squidpi.

Appearance

Chase is a tall, athletic man with dark skin. He has amber eyes, but is shown wearing blue Mixed Reality lenses in his Ether avatar and when mixing in. He has a somewhat broad nose and dark brown hair. The left side of his hairline has blue luminous streaks of hair that act as futuristic tattoos and a thin luminous blue line goes around sides of his hairline. His primary attire used to be a form-fitting suit worn by Interceptor pilots, which is in shades of blue, black and gray. The design was later changed to resemble the Experimental Science Unit's prototype body suit, with blue and black armor plating and luminous blue highlights. He resembles actor Michael B. Jordan, something he pointed out while watching Black Panther with his friend Hatsune Miku.

Casually, Chase wears brown trousers, a black shirt with white stylistic rhombus shapes on it, a gray hoodie with cyan interior and white shoes. His Ether avatar mirrors his casual outfit, but the blue color in his appearance is more glowing and prominent.

Following the Battle of New York City, he lost his right arm and the entire lower half of his body, and the back of his skull has since been plated with metal.

Personality

Chase is described as an "All-American guy" by Gray G. Haddock, who continued to describe Chase as "charming, funny and the first guy to break the ice to make sure people are doing OK." Michael B. Jordan has described Chase as "a very selfless person who wants to do the right thing and would sacrifice himself in order to protect the world and the people he loves." Chase also has the leadership skills to help form the show's main team. His current struggle entails adjusting to life after personal tragedy.

He regrets having to keep his survival a secret from his girlfriend Miranda Worth, for the four years since his crash, despite believing that it was justified. In spite this however, he is very willing to give his all for the gen:LOCK program, believing it is better to spend his time doing something worthwhile instead of living out his final days just waiting for death to come to him, contrasting with Valentina Romanyszyn's more apathetic and self-centered worldview.

Chase possesses a sly sense of humor, telling Kazu Iida how he needs to choose his words wisely and meeting the former sergeant's challenge by mentioning how Yasamin Madrani will "kick his ass." Chase's sense of humor is instrumental in keeping everyone around him calm in the face of extraordinary circumstances without distracting them from the matters at hand, displaying his cool leadership in the face of fire.

However, Chase's calm and relaxed nature hides deep hang-ups and insecurities, only truly showing his vulnerabilities when he is alone or with close friends. He can also be rather brusque with people when he is angered, displaying a harshness with Dr. Weller upon discovering the true nature of Nemesis, the original mind of Chase himself. When in this state, Chase is shown to be very stubborn and focused, spending the entirety of the Battle of The Anvil fighting Nemesis, and only pulling away once he is forced to defend his allies. Learning the truth about him and Nemesis also triggers an existential crisis, leading to Chase considering himself nothing more than a "code branch", briefly shattering his confidence and his faith in his humanity.

For the longest time, Chase had a deep aversion to mindsharing due to an extreme sense of protectiveness over his mind and sense of identity. After losing the use of his body, Chase saw his mind as the only real thing that he had left, and came to dread any kind of change or evolution on his part, fearing that he would lose himself in the process. It is only after the support of his new teammates that Chase finally gains the confidence to move on and grow as a person.

In the Channel Awesome universe, Chase is more laid-back and sure of himself, but not to the point of cockiness. He shares a close bond with his girlfriend Hatsune Miku, often being silly together. He can also be very deadpan sometimes. Not to mention, he has a tremendous love of food, to the point where he chose to review various food he's eaten.

History

Julian Chase was born and raised in New York City, a Polity protected zone. He lived with his mother, Roberta Chase, and sister, Driana Chase. His parents were both police officers in the New York City Police Department. His father was killed in the line of duty when Chase was young, though his mother made it to retirement. At some point, Chase left New York to join the Vanguard, which required the Weller test among other screenings, which identified him as gen:LOCK compatible. In the Vanguard, he became an Interceptor pilot rose to the rank of first lieutenant, and was stationed at the Anvil.

In 2016, Chase visits his mother and sister via Mixed Reality with his girlfriend Miranda Worth moments before the Union attacks the city. Colonel Raquel Marin sends forces from The Anvil to defend the city, Chase among them. While he evades Union drones and fighters, the Union wreaks havoc at ground level with its Nanotech, severely hindering the Vanguard's efforts to aid the citizens and repel the Union, killing many. When a Behemoth appears near the city, Chase decides to risk his life and detonate his ESD even though Simone Rasmussen's attempt resulted in her death. Though he successfully discharges his ESD, he is forced his Interceptor to shield it from the Behemoth's anti-air fire, damaging it and causing it to crash, and is presumed dead by his friends.

However, while on death's door, Experimental Science Unit rushes in to rescue him, as he was one of its most important soldiers. Having suffered grievous injuries, he is put in a preservation tank where he could achieve gen:LOCK, having agreed to the program.

While he was on a mission, the Union captured Chase, whose mind was still trapped within the prototype Holon. After fruitlessly attempting to find and rescue Chase, Weller places a second, digitized copy he had been compiling of Chase's brain back into his body. To Chase, he was offline for a few hours and never went on the mission, unaware that he is a copy of Chase's mind and not the original. After this, no more copies of Chase's mind were made and Weller had no intention of making copies of the minds of future gen:LOCK pilots. Chase continues to work under Weller, eventually working alongside Yasamin Madrani before being stationed back at the Anvil.

Four years after the Battle of New York, Chase is believed to be among those who died in the battle but reappeared in his Holon to help the Vanguard in a rescue mission, among them being his friends Leon, Jodie, and former lover Miranda, shocking her upon hearing his voice once more as he and Yaz retreated along with the Striders after securing the refugees.

Back at the Anvil, with the three Strider pilots questioning the Colonel about the unknown mechs that helped them, Julian finally revealed himself through Mixed Reality to his old friends that he was alive, much to the shock and disbelief of his fellow soldiers who were convinced he perished in the Battle of New York.

Rufus Weller, the lead scientist of the ESU and the man who saved Chase from death, explains that Chase managed to survive his crash with his incredible will to survive and they managed to get him to safety before giving him the choice to be the first to pilot the new experimental technology, gen:LOCK.

Now, as a hologram, he's formed a close bond with Hatsune Miku and chose to start a food review show in his spare time. He also uses this time to review reality shows, made-for-TV movies, and stuff on HBO Max.
